Μαυρομμάτη που ακολουθεί κατά πόδας το προηγούμενό του \"Λεξικό Αστρονομίας\" (2001), το οποίο εκδόθηκε συμπληρωμένο σε δεύτερη έκδοση το 2006. Αναφέρομαι και στο προηγούμενο βιβλίο του κ. Μαυρομμάτη γιατί στον διάβα των τεσσάρων δεκαετιών, στις οποίες διακονώ την επιστήμη της αστρονομίας, δεν έχω συναντήσει κάτι παρόμοιο στην ελληνική γλώσσα. Το \"λεξικό\" εκείνο είναι ένα πόνημα (με όλη τη σημασία της λέξης), που γράφτηκε με περισσή αγάπη για την επιστήμη του ουρανού από έναν αξιόλογο μαθηματικό, εκπαιδευτικό, γυμνασιάρχη και λυκειάρχη, ο οποίος επί μισό περίπου αιώνα, συνεχίζει απτόητος να ασχολείται με την διάχυση της επιστήμης, συνταξιούχος πλέον σήμερα, αλλά ως πρόεδρος της Εταιρείας Αστρονομίας και Διαστήματος του Βόλου, μιας από τις σημαντικότερες στη χώρα μας.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eΤο έργο εκείνο, και οι 600 περίπου σελίδες, από τις οποίες αποτελείται, άρχισε να γράφεται το 1974 και δικαίως ο συγγραφέας το θεωρεί \"έργο ζωής\"! Κι έτσι, το δεδομένο βιβλίο είναι και πλήρες και άριστα ενημερωμένο με την τελευταία λέξη της επιστήμης της αστρονομίας, ενώ το περιεχόμενο του, παρόλο που κάθε του λήμμα είναι σύντομο, είναι εν τούτοις περιεκτικό και δοσμένο με έναν γλαφυρό τρόπο παρέχοντας ακόμη και σε αμύητους αναγνώστες μια πλήρη και κατανοητή περιγραφή του.....\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e....... Πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο που βρίσκεται πραγματικά στη διεθνή πρωτοπορία. Τις τελευταίες τέσσερις δεκαετίες, μάλιστα, έχω εντρυφήσει με ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον σ' αυτού του είδους την διεθνή βιβλιογραφία, και χωρίς καμιά δόση υπερβολής δεν έχω εντοπίσει κανένα παρόμοιο βιβλίο σε οποιαδήποτε άλλη γλώσσα, τόσο πλήρες και εκτενές, όσο τα δύο αυτά \"λεξικά\" του κ. Μαυρομμάτη. I accept this offer and immediately I proceeded to all the steps necessary to prepare such a translation, which is now in your hands.\u003cbr\u003eThe science of the astronomy is not stationary but instead it advances in a dynamical way and reveals to us facets of the structure and operation of the Universe all the time.\u003cbr\u003eThese new data and some new entries we discovered in the meantime were included in the form of an Addendum at the end of the Greek Second Edition, which includes both additions to the already existing entries based on the latest research results (these entries are labeled \"addition\") and new entries that were found in the new literature published in the meantime. For easier reference to this Addendum it was printed on a different type of slightly colored paper. In the present English edition the entries of the Addendum have been incorporated by alphabetical order in the main body of the work. \u003cbr\u003eWe believe that this Second Edition with Addendum will be also accepted by the leaders and for this reason we want to thank them warmly in advance.
