Αυτό το οποίο γνωρίζουν πολύ καλά οι μελετητές της ιστορίας των επιστημών είναι ότι: το τέλος μιας μεγάλης επιστημονικής επανάστασης σηματοδοτεί την αρχή μεγάλων κοινωνικών ανακατατάξεων. Η μεγάλη επιστημονική επανάσταση που συντελέστηκε κατά τη διάρκεια του 20ού αιώνα φτάνει στο τέλος της, αλλά διατηρείται δογματικά έξω από το γνωστικό πεδίο του μέσου πολίτη, ως αποτελούσα κίνδυνο για μια κοινωνική και θεολογική δομή οι οποίες πλέον δεν πείθουν τους πολίτες για τις προθέσεις τους. Ο δυτικός πολιτισμός βρίσκεται σε συνθήκες κατάρρευσης. Η θεολογία και η κοινωνική δομή πρέπει να προσαρμοστούν και να μεταλλαχθούν με τρόπο ώστε να γίνουν αποδέκτες και χειριστές των νέων επιστημονικών ανακαλύψεων, οι οποίες δεν μπορούν να παραμένουν πλέον στο περιθώριο. Ο επιστήμονας τη στιγμή της μεγάλης πολιτισμικής κρίσης, όπως και σε άλλες αντίστοιχες περιόδους, οφείλει να τολμήσει να αποτελέσει τον ισχυρό βραχίονα για το ξεπέρασμα της κρίσης, εκφραζόμενος ελεύθερα σε όλα τα επίπεδα, ασχέτως του κοινωνικού και επαγγελματικού κόστους που πολλές φορές μπορεί και να είναι τεράστιο.
