Οι στοές στην αρχαιότητα ήταν δημόσια οικοδομήματα, με μία τουλάχιστον πλευρά κιονοστήρικτη και ανοιχτή προς το ύπαιθρο. Τις συναντάμε σε ιερά, αγορές, θέατρα, γυμναστήρια. Συνήθως χρησίμευαν για τη στέγαση εμπορικών δραστηριοτήτων και για περιπάτους, προσφέροντας σκιά και δροσιά το καλοκαίρι και προστασία από τη βροχή και τον αέρα το χειμώνα. Η Στοά του Αττάλου οφείλει το όνομά της στο βασιλιά της Περγάμου Άτταλο Β΄ (159-138 π.Χ.), της μακεδόνικης δυναστείας των Ατταλιδών, ο οποίος χρηματοδότησε την κατασκευή της. Γιος του βασιλιά Αττάλου Α΄ και της βασίλισσας Απολλωνίδος και αδελφός του Ευμένη Β΄ (197-159 π.Χ.), υπήρξε φίλος και ευεργέτης των Αθηναίων όπως ακριβώς και ο αδελφός του, ο οποίος χρηματοδότησε την ανέγερση μίας ακόμη στοάς στη νότια κλιτύ (πλαγιά) της Ακρόπολης.
