Ακόμη, προκειμένου να αποκτήσει ο αναγνώστης μια συνολική εικόνα της αρχιτεκτονικής της περιόδου αυτής, κρίθηκε σκόπιμο να συμπεριληφθούν στον παρόντα τόμο όχι μόνον κτήρια αμιγώς οθωμανικά ως προς τη λειτουργία ή την αρχιτεκτονική τους, όπως π.χ. τζαμιά, ιμαρέτ, χαμάμ, τεκέδες κ.λ.π., αλλά και κάστρα, γεφύρια, χάνια ή κατοικίες που ήσαν σε χρήση από όλο τον πληθυσμό.\u003cbr\u003eΟ τόμος διαρθρώνεται σε τρία μέρη. Το πρώτο μέρος αποτελείται από τρία εισαγωγικά κεφάλαια, εκ των οποίων το πρώτο δίνει ιστορικές πληροφορίες για την Οθωμανική αυτοκρατορία γενικά αλλά και για τον ελλαδικό χώρο ειδικά, ενώ τα επόμενα αναφέρονται στα χαρακτηριστικά της οθωμανικής αρχιτεκτονικής στην Ελλάδα. [...]\u003cbr\u003eΤο κεφάλαιο της οθωμανικής αρχιτεκτονικής εισάγει ουσιαστικά τον αναγνώστη στο κύριο, δεύτερο, μέρος όπου περιγράφονται τα μνημεία ανά γεωγραφική περιοχή. Σε αρκετές περιπτώσεις προτάσσεται ένα κατατοπιστικό σημείωμα για τις πόλεις στις οποίες αυτά βρίσκονται, και τη συγκρότησή τους κατά την Οθωμανική περίοδο. Πολύτιμος αρωγός στο οδοιπορικό αυτό ο Οθωμανός περιηγητής Εβλιγιά Τσελεμπί, ο οποίος κατά τον 17ο αιώνα ταξίδεψε στις πόλεις της Οθωμανικής αυτοκρατορίας και μας έδωσε την περιγραφή πολλών μνημείων. Όσο κι αν η μαρτυρία του έχει θεωρηθεί υπερβολική ή μη ακριβής σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις, πάντως αποτελεί πλούσια δεξαμενή πληροφοριών, η οποία σε συνδυασμό με άλλες πηγές, ιστορικές, αρχειακές, αρχαιολογικές κ.λ.π., μας βοηθά στην ταύτιση και χρονολόγηση μνημείων.\u003cbr\u003eΠροσπαθήσαμε ώστε τα λήμματα των μνημείων να έχουν ενιαία μορφή, και να περιλαμβάνουν όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερες πληροφορίες. Έτσι το κάθε λήμμα περιλαμβάνει ιστορικά στοιχεία (όπου υπάρχουν), χρονολόγηση, αρχιτεκτονική περιγραφή, αλλά και τις κυριότερες επεμβάσεις αποκατάστασης και ανάδειξης που έχουν γίνει σε αυτά, καθώς και αναφορά στις νέες χρήσεις που έχουν αποκτήσει αρκετά μνημεία, προκειμένου να ενταχθούν στη σύγχρονη πολιτιστική ζωή του τόπου.\u003cbr\u003eΟ τόμος κλείνει με ένα χρονολόγιο, ένα γλωσσάρι για τους αρχιτεκτονικούς κυρίως όρους που χρησιμοποιούνται στο κείμενο και πιθανόν να δυσκολέψουν τον μη ειδικό αναγνώστη, και, τέλος, με την παράθεση της βιβλιογραφίας. Also, in order to enable the reader to acquire a complete overview of the architecture of this period, a point has been made of including not only buildings which are unquestionably Ottoman in their function and architecture, such as mosques, imarets, hamams, tekkes etc., but also citadels, bridges or dwellings which were in use by all sections of the population.\u003cbr\u003eΊhe book is divided into three parts. Part 1 consists of three introductory chapters, the first of which provides a general account of the Ottoman Empire and the Greek lands more specifically, while the second and third discuss the characteristics of Ottoman architecture in Greece. For readers' convenience, Ottoman architecture is divided into secular and religious categοries, though this is no more than a convention, since the boundary between religious and secular architecture is hard to draw. Supposedly \"secular\" buildings such as bath houses are often part of larger religious-philanthropic-educational complexes.\u003cbr\u003eThe chapters on Ottoman architecture serve as an introduction to Part 2, the heart of the book, where the monuments are described region by region. In many cases the regional sections are prefaced by a historical introduction to the main town and its growth under Ottoman rule. An invaluable source for this survey is provided by the 17th century Ottoman traveler Evliya Celebi, who left precious descriptions of many towns and their monuments. Evliya's account' is often exaggerated or inaccurate, but still a rich source of information, which in conjunction will, other sources (historical, archival, archaeological and so forth) helps us to identify and date our monuments.\u003cbr\u003eΑn effort has been made to standardize the descriptions of monuments and to make them as thorough as possible. Each entry contains an account of the monument's history (where that is possible), its dating and its architectural form, including the main phases of repair and restoration. Reference is also made to the new uses to which a number of buildings have been put, in order to give them a role in the country's contemporary cultural life.\u003cbr\u003eThe book closes with a time chart, a glossary of (mainly) architectural terms used in the text and which may confuse the non-specialist, and finally, a bibliography.
