Συνήθως χρησίμευαν για τη στέγαση εμπορικών δραστηριοτήτων και για περιπάτους, προσφέροντας σκιά και δροσιά το καλοκαίρι και προστασία από τη βροχή και τον αέρα το χειμώνα. Η Στοά του Αττάλου οφείλει το όνομά της στο βασιλιά της Περγάμου Άτταλο Β΄ (159-138 π.Χ.), της μακεδόνικης δυναστείας των Ατταλιδών, ο οποίος χρηματοδότησε την κατασκευή της. Γιος του βασιλιά Αττάλου Α΄ και της βασίλισσας Απολλωνίδος και αδελφός του Ευμένη Β΄ (197-159 π.Χ.), υπήρξε φίλος και ευεργέτης των Αθηναίων όπως ακριβώς και ο αδελφός του, ο οποίος χρηματοδότησε την ανέγερση μίας ακόμη στοάς στη νότια κλιτύ (πλαγιά) της Ακρόπολης.
