Άλλοτε πάλι, σκέφτομαι ότι εγώ δεν φτιάχνομαι, είμαι αδιόρθωτος και τελειωτικά χαλασμένος κι υποψιάζομαι άλλα κίνητρα, ευτελή και ποταπά και άθλια εντελώς, που με κινούν να γράψω αυτή την ιστορία. Ως εδώ όμως! Πολλά είπα, ασαφή και νεφελώδη, και τον αναγνώστη (είμαι σχεδόν σίγουρος) τον έχω μπερδέψει και την υπομονή του κοντεύω πια να την εξαντλήσω. Στο κάτω κάτω, φτάνουν όλ' αυτά ως πρόλογος και πήρα αρκετό κουράγιο για ν' αρχίσω.
