Στον κύκλο των συναναστροφών μου, δε βρέθηκε άλλος ισάξιός μου. Ο Πλάτωνας κι ο Ξενοφώντας γράφουνε πως η σοφία έτρεχε απ' τα μπατζάκια μου. Σ' αυτό σιγοντάρισε και το παπαδολόι των Δελφών που με το \"χρησμό\" του με αποκάλεσε... σοφότατον. Το πίστευε; Οχι, βέβαια. Μα τότε γιατί διέπραξε τη \"λαδιά\" κοτζάμ ιερατείο; Απλούστατα, για το συμφέρον του. Τα λόγια της Πυθίας, υπηρετούσανε το κύρος του μαντείου και ρυθμίζονταν ανάλογα. Ελόγου μου, όταν στριμωχνόμουνα στη συζήτηση με ερωτήσεις που δεν ήξερα να δώσω απόκριση, ξεγλίστραγα μ' ένα σόφισμα. 'Έλεγα ότι παντογνώστες είναι μονάχα οι Θεοί, γιατί η σοφία είναι ιδιοχτησία των Θεών, δηλαδή του ιερατείου. Το πονηρό παπαδαριό, όταν πληροφορήθηκε τα λόγια μου, δεν έχασε την ευκαιρία. 'Έβγαλε αμέσως το χρησμό \"Σωκράτης σοφότατος\" ώστε να μη τολμά κανένας να αμφισβητήσει τη γνώμη μου. - Και τη γνώμη τους.- Δεν το 'χα σκοπό να πάω... από \"ατύχημα\" σαν τον Αίσωπο. Εξάλλου με σύμφερε ο χρησμός, αφού μου 'δινε κύρος και κατατρόπωνα στις συζητήσεις τους σοφιστές αντιπάλους μου. Βέβαια την κοροϊδία και τον αντίλογο τα είχα από γεννησιμιού μου, δώρα της φύσης.
